Body lotions are moisturizers formulated with emollients, restorative agents, and moisturizing ingredients to nourish and repair all skin types. These are applied topically and are an important part of the daily skincare routine.

Emollients usually wrap around the skincare routine, acting as a sealant for previously applied products and helping to keep your skin soft. Emollients may vary in texture and viscosity. Those for normal skin usually have a light, creamy undertone. Gel or water-based products for oily skin will prevent your skin from becoming greasy during the day.

If your skin is dry, choosing a thick cream formula will help keep you moisturized for longer. Some body lotions are also formulated to address specific issues such as skin sensitivity, premature aging, cellulite, etc.

Why use a body lotion?

Your skin is kept moisturized by two types of lipids, epidermal lipids, and sebum lipids. Epidermal lipids consist of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, while sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands consists of triglycerides, squalene, and wax esters.

These lipids play a vital role in maintaining the skin barrier, preventing transepidermal water loss, and preventing microbial invasion.

However, as your skin ages, combined with continued exposure to environmental damage, these lipids begin to deplete, leaving your skin with a dry, unhealthy appearance. This is where body lotion comes to the rescue.

It hydrates your skin, replenishes lost lipids, and helps rebuild the damaged epidermal barrier to prevent unwanted moisture loss. As a result, your skin looks plumper, and moisturized and exudes a youthful glow.

According to Dr. Zeel Gandhi, Chief Ayurvedic Physician at Vedix, "The skin is the barrier between the world and you. The skin's chemistry also helps to strengthen the barrier against environmental stressors. Excessively dry or oily skin is not suitable for normal skin homeostasis. A good body lotion can help you achieve a delicate balance that translates into good skin immunity."

How Do I Choose a Liquid Concealer Shade?

A. Dry Skin

Dry skin needs a lot of moisture. According to Ayurveda, people with Vata prakriti (constitution) are more prone to dryness. Therefore, it is recommended to use a luxuriously thick creamy body lotion.

This will not only moisturize your skin but also help reduce visible cracks and wrinkles by filling in the gaps in the skin barrier. body lotions containing shea butter, coconut/avocado/almond oil, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin are good choices.

B. Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, you don't have to worry about it. Choose your body lotion according to your lifestyle.

If you spend a lot of time in an air-conditioned office, choose a more moisturizing formula. Too much time outdoors requires a body lotion with SPF to protect your skin from sun damage and premature aging.

C. Oily Skin

Oily skin types are best suited to non-comedogenic gels or water-based body lotions that absorb easily into the skin and do not leave a greasy layer. Choose a product that contains ingredients such as aloe vera, rose or lotus extract, green tea extract and tea tree oil to control acne problems.

D. Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin requires careful product selection to avoid unwanted allergic reactions.

Look for body lotions that contain natural ingredients that are anti-inflammatory and calming to the skin, such as chamomile, manjistha, vetiver, cucumber, triphala, rosemary, turmeric and sandalwood.

In addition to your skin type, weather conditions will also affect the type of body lotion your skin needs. Cold weather may require a slightly thicker formula to prevent easy dehydration, while a lighter, water-based formula is appropriate for summer.
