Choosing the right height
Bar stools come in a range of sizes so it will help narrow down your search if you know right from the start what height you need. First things first, you need to know that bar stools are measured from the ground to the seat and not the back rest. Secondly, there are 3 categories to choose from: residential counter, bar, and low stool heights.
Counter benches in homes tend to be 95cm high which is why we recommend a stool height of 66cm. This gives you the perfect amount of room to get your knees comfortably below the counter. The bar heights in cafes and bars is commonly 105 cm so we recommend choosing a bar stool with a 76cm height. Low stools are recommended to be 46cm in height and work well with standard cafe tables. Finally, if you’re using dry bar tables, then it’s best to pair it with a 76cm stool.
What’s your style?
Typically this decision should be based on your theme and décor and is much a personal choice. Styles to consider include classic, industrial, contemporary, and rattan. If you want a stool that will never go out of fashion, then bentwood are easily recognisable and iconic. Thanks to different timber stains you’re sure to find a classic bentwood stool to suit your space. Industrial is a trend that is still popular and many people favour Tolix with this type of theme. Manufactured from steel with a powder coated finish in a wide range of colours, they’re certainly a popular choice. Contemporary stools are often minimalist in style and colour. With sleek lines and simple angles they fit well into a modern space and often feature light, blonde timber seats. Finally, you might want to consider rattan stools which inject your space with a touch of Parisian flair and evoke feelings of warmth and fun.

Cafe stools are often made from wood or metal but you can also find them manufactured from polypropylene or resin. In addition, you’ll want to consider whether your stools have backrests and arms. These offer more comfort to customers but take up more room, so if space is limited, we’d suggest you use backless, armless stools. Upholstery is another consideration. Naturally a padded seat adds more comfort but if you go down that route then consider a seat cushion that is washable or easily wiped down.
Type of floor the stool is going on
If your floors are timber or polished concrete then we would suggest that you use felt covered nylon stoppers to protect your floor from scratches and scrapes. If your floor is carpeted then a simply nylon stopper will do the trick.
So these are the basics to consider when choosing bar stools. We may have forgotten to mention it, but do make sure you only buy commercial stools are these are designed to withstand all the rigours of a bustling environment.
Just got these and were easy to put together; only four screws to add the back of the chair. Came very nicely packaged and in great shape. Def. not “copper” but I knew they were darker from the pictures and other people’s descriptions. I highly recommend to start screwing in one side just enough the hold and then working clockwise around the chair till you end up on the last side. Only screw in enough to hold in place then tighten all the screws. This definitely makes for the easiest assembly because you can pull on the chair back and align all the holes way better! I LOVE that the foot rest bars are welded and that these to not swivel! My old stools had a foot rest that was a screwed in ring and would constantly get loose and the swivel chairs all broke eventually. Ugh. These seem very sturdy and comfy, looking forward to getting a lot of use out of them. I may add a matte protective top coat.... will see!
