Roof top tent on a A.R.E camper shell?
Can a Roof Top Tent Be Used on an A.R.E. Camper Shell?
Hey there! I know there are plenty of discussions out there regarding this topic, but many of them don't provide a clear answer. I'm curious to hear your thoughts. I own a Tacoma double cab with a 5ft bed fitted with an A.R.E. CX camper shell. Does anyone have experience installing a rooftop tent on top of it? I'm especially concerned about the weight. My family, which includes my wife and son, could easily weigh around 500 lbs combined, excluding the tent's weight. A camper dealer I spoke to previously assured me that it shouldn't be an issue and suggested using a Reese carry power ratcheting cargo bar for extra support while camping.
I genuinely enjoy my camper shell. It offers the convenience of securing my gear without worrying about theft or exposure to the elements.
If attaching a rooftop tent doesn't work out, I'm considering alternatives like Leitner Designs or the AT Habitat option. However, I would need to sell the A.R.E. shell to afford it. The setup from Leitner Designs, complete with racks and additional features, would be nearly $$. While it's an impressive setup, it means I would no longer have the space to keep things in the bed without concern for wet conditions. With confidence in the load-bearing capacity of both my family and the tent, I feel reassured.
On another note, I've been contemplating the Habitat. The downside I see is its price, nearing $10,000, and it lacks a wide sleeping platform compared to a rooftop tent. Additionally, I currently enjoy my 23zero tent but am also considering the Freespirit High Country option. I'm eager for feedback on that.
Roof Top Tent Considerations for Truck Caps
Does anyone know if a truck cap can support a 225 lb rooftop tent along with four people? I doubt my family would exceed 800 lbs together, but I'd like reassurance on the capacity of the cap. Here's what I’ve found so far:
A.R.E. - The dealer claimed their HD Series could handle the weight, although they don't make one for my Tacoma DCLB model.
Leer - Unfortunately, none of their caps can accommodate that weight.
Snugtop - They also lack suitable models, and I don’t think they have dealers located east of the Mississippi.
I wonder if other manufacturers exist. I could consider placing the tent on top of the cab; however, the model I prefer (CVT Mckinley) is too long for that area, creating an overhang. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Some people have successfully installed rooftop tents, but it is generally advised to have some form of internal support to manage the weight. Moreover, secure the tent to prevent shifting, as this could lead to cracks in the fiberglass. Another risk is the potential for the bed walls to spread and crack at the bottom of the rear uprights; there are threads with images illustrating these issues.

If you opt to buy a new topper with tracks, towers, and cross bars (I’d recommend 3 or 4 bars to distribute the load), your costs will climb; you might reach around 80% of the price of a Flip Pac, which doubles as a topper. It offers convenience since you won't have to store anything separately.
I’ll investigate these options. While they might look a bit unattractive, I’m not keen on sleeping on the overhanging portion, but it’s worth consideration. With the Tacoma Habitat, I worry that my weight will cause the front wheels to lift off the ground.
Racks can be installed beneath caps; however, most modern fiberglass caps extend over the outside bed rail for aesthetic and weatherproofing purposes. This may necessitate a drop bracket or cutting the fiberglass, which would require sealing. I’ve seen examples of both methods, along with an external rack anchored to the front sliders and rear bumper without touching the cap itself—consider a removable design. Registering on expeditionportal.com is recommended for additional visuals, as I've found worthwhile images there.
Internal bracing will occupy much of your limited space if you attach it to the bed floor. One user creatively designed a support that utilized the internal tie-down channels instead.
Personally, I’d steer clear of the Flip Pac unless you find a great deal on a used one that’s in good condition. Pay special attention to the front near the hinges for rotting and check the torsion bar's integrity. The new AT shell seems to offer more promise than others from nearly every aspect.
I plan to delve further into investigations. Since I'm only looking for a max weight of lbs, it should be manageable. I envision something akin to a NASCAR roll cage, although ideally, much smaller in diameter!
